Just googled that problem and had several mention failed head gaskets as the cause.
Make sure you get the "replaced" thermostat so you can test it in a cup of water that is microwaved hot. if the thermostat cycles, when you drop it in the hot water (almost boiling) it was fine.

If you copy that link and read the last post in the thread it will detail the issue quite nicely. (I guarantee it's not the thermostat.)
Unfortunately, now we know why it was cheap. If you've got a warranty for 90 days or whatever, I'd tell them to keep it.
