Best on a raw, cold, wet day in Louisiana . . .

I asked P&D’s Pop to find us a movie we could go to today because the weather is a bit misérable but he couldn’t find anything even close to worth our time. He was looking at me askance as I was checking out Amazon Prime on the TV because, for some reason of his very own, he doesn’t seem to like the shows or movies on Prime one iota! I pooh-poohed him and continued to search until I found something that I bookmarked. I had to save it because he came in from The Shed and said ‘We just have time to go to The Birdman Café before they stop serving breakfast.’ What a perfect trip we had up I 10 to 110 to 61 in 45 minutes to St. Francisville.

The Café was busy as all get out and we had to sit at a table instead of the counter where I love to sit and watch the cook cook. Their River Road Coffee is nice and rugged even in the decafe mode for moi! Grampa had his usual breakfast of eggs, grits and biscuits while I had the superb Sweet Potato Waffle with lots of butter and cane syrup. This was a heavenly breakfast plus I did myself a very good deed too. I spoke with the lady owner and offered to buy a painting she had done years ago if she ever decides she wants to sell it. I was told by one of the waitresses last year that it is the iconic art work that embodies the spirit of the Birdman and is not for sale even though most of the art on the walls  by local artists is for sale. As I was enjoying my waffle I had a brainstorm so as we were leaving I spoke with the owner about my idea: she should have her painting copied and made into note cards to sell in her unique breakfast  café. She liked the idea so much that she said she is going to do it! I can’t wait to buy boxes of the finished product. I’ll never have to buy note cards again! I’m so brilliant I scare myself!

Before we left St. Francisville we stopped by My Mississippi; I had to feel the water and enjoy its wonder.

A couple of observations . . .

Red-headed Woodpecker
We’ve had medical insurance problems since the Connecticut Teacher’s Retirement Board changed to Anthem on July 1st. They seem to have corrected themselves as we haven’t received any extra doctors’ bills in a while! But now the dental insurance is cause for concern - well, not exactly Cigna rather the dental office we usually go to has changed hands since our young dentist died a few months ago after returning from his daughter’s destination wedding in Cancun. So . . . P&D’s Pop and I went for our routine cleanings with the new dentist and his technician in Zachary, LA; we were told that we both needed crowns. The visit cost us $125 ( cleanings, extra fluoride and deductibles etc.) I knew that Dr. Mackey in Groton, CT had one more crown to complete for me but we moved to Louisiana before she could finish our plan of action. The same held for P&D’s Pop. We were given estimates for what it would cost us out of our own pockets - I’ll round up to $1000 for each of us! We both declined to set appointments other than for our routine cleanings and said we’d get back to them.

I called Cigna and spoke with a woman who went through our estimates; she said that if we had the work done at the dentist’s home office in Denham Springs we would only have to pay $500 each because they are in network while the Zachary office is out of network! We had not realized that the new dentist came from our home town! I called the Zachary Office and they changed our routine checkups to Denham Springs and we made appointments for yesterday morning to speak with Dr. Mindy Moore about the crowns. Well the new paperwork for the crown at this office said we would have to pay $800 each. So I explained to Dr. Moore's technician that the lady at Cigna said it should only be $500 each. Back to the drawing board she went and returned with her corrected figures - yuppers, $500 each. This is crazy! We can’t trust the dentist’s office to calculate things properly? I guess I’ll have to question every medical office we go to from now on and ask for itemized bills and call the insurances myself to make sure we are not being charged improperly. I find this outrageous. No explanation was given except that if we had paid the $800 then they would have sent us a check for the over payment! I am flabbergasted.

Okay - rant done for today!

Changed my mind. And another thing, neither Dr. Moore nor her assistant, Trish, ever used right or left when they gave me any directions as they worked on my tooth. The Dentist said, 'Turn toward Trish.' or 'Turn toward me.' Now I know I'm quibbling here but Ms Trish explained this to me as she did the preparations for the tooth repair. What was funny was that she was telling me how they would be giving me directions such as, 'Turn toward me, but I'll be on the other side of you then and Dr. Mindy will be on this side.' (which was the right side for the Dentist and the left side for the technician.) Are we really so dumb now that we don't know right from left? Holy smokes!  What a disgrace.

Okay - I guess that's it.

Eureka . . .

We found the wayward right hearing aid! At P&D’s Pop’s suggestion I slowly shook out everything we brought with us for our sojourn in Natchez and there with the laundry, on top of my walk-on-the-room-415-floor-socks was the hearing aid. Wow! It must have fallen on top of them when I moved the book. I’m still crying copious tears because although they are insured I’ve been so angry at myself for loosing it I’m almost in shock that it showed up. P&D’s Pop figured it would. He really ransacked the hotel room looking for it and was positive it was in the suitcase. Thank goodness he was right - AGAIN! I called the hotel and called off their search too! Life is just fine once again!

Heartbroken . . .

We  had the best time yesterday meeting our Big Kiddo and his wife at Lake Cocodrie for a fantastic boat ride and fishing spree in their new catfish boat. The weather was perfect and P&D’s Pop caught a nice sized catfish before we docked the boat. We ate some fresh shrimp and gumbo; also tested out the brisket and barbecued chicken from the cookoff at the campground. We stayed at a great hotel in Natchez overlooking the Mississippi River Bridge and went out to dinner at the Magnolia Bluffs Casino where we were to watch the best show on Earth - Sunset on the Mississippi. After we said out good nights we got a good night’s sleep before all hell and stupidity broke out before 7am this morning

I had placed my hearing aids on top of my book on a little table in our room. I picked up the book to pack it and the hearing aids fell off. As crazy as this is I immediately picked up the left hearing aid and put it on; we never found the right hearing aid. P&D’s Pop and I looked everywhere and moved every piece of furniture at least three times and we never found the hearing aid. We went through the trash, the suitcase, the medecine bag, the clothes I was wearing, the bedding. Nothing! Absolutely nothing turned up except a pen that was under a bed. I spoke with the gentleman at the desk and asked him to notify the ladies who clean the rooms to be on the lookout for my right hearing aid but I don’t see how they can find it if we couldn’t find it after thoroughly looking everywhere possible. The only plausible reason for the disappearance is P&D’s Pop’s - the hearing aid must have gotten caught in my clothes and when I used the bathroom it fell into the commode! Man, I hate to agree with that assessment but it certainly seems to be gone, never to return. So when we get home I have to get out the paperwork and see if I have some sort of insurance coverage for a lost hearing aid. Incredible! In retrospect I should always put the hearing aids in the box I have to protect them when I have to take them off for any reason. Yes, heart broken to tears.

Long ride but an excellent weekend . . .

Sweet rides
Slept at our son’s home last Wednesday and Thursday so I could take care of his 6 year old grandson while his Mom and Grammy brought his younger brother to the Children’s Hospital in New Orléans. Our son is at a job site in Texas for another couple of weeks so it’s a good thing I could help out. I really didn’t have to do much as P was in school during the day so I just had to bring him to school and pick him up at the end of the day. We did homework together, made puzzles, walked the dogs and ate a delicious Chicken Alfredo my daughter-in-law made for us before she left. P&D’s Pop came for lunch one day and we ate at Lagniappe’s in Zachary. I hadn’t heard anything great about the place but we found it to be quite good and not too expensive. I love the name! It means ‘a little something extra!’ Very Cajun, I think. After I dropped P at school Friday morning at 7 I drove directly home so P&D’s Pop could remove the back seats in the Hyundai and then he could pack three Control Line planes for our trip to Glen St. Mary, Florida. It’s about 555 miles from home and took us nine hours with stops. I’m pretty good with 8 hour trips but any thing longer than that makes me squirm! I can’t sit still easily; I fidget a lot! We ended up staying at a Red Roof Inn for $59 a night. The price was right but the place had definitely seen better days about 60 years ago! But it was clean; there really were not any snazzy places to stay in Macclenny, the nearest town with any hotels not too far from the flying field. Macclenny is an old town and certainly isn’t booming. It’s main road was 6th Street and we were please as punch to find a very good breakfast place that also had beer and excellent dinners; The 6th Street Steakhouse was just perfect for most of our meals. At the field a lady in a lunch truck came and cooked up burgers, hot dogs etc. The field used to belong to a church that ran a home for wayward boys and I guess straightened out quite a few of those boys over many years but some do gooders took it upon themselves to say the church was too harsh for the kids. The church was forced to give up its mission and somehow or other the Shade Tree Flying Club got themselves a nice flying site. They had three well mowed circles for the contest. There were not as many contestants as usual because Hurricane Florence was attacking the Carolinas and keeping people away! As a matter of fact I think that all three of the vintage hotels were filled to capacity because of the number of families who had to evacuate before the storm hit.

P&D’s Pop flew well and won Third Place in Profile Stunt even though on his second flight half of the wing went flying off of the plane! I helped out by running the scores from the judges to the score keeper. I got in 4 1/2 miles of walking Saturday! That kept me busy along with taking a few photos of some wild flowers. We finished around 2 pm and P&D’s Pop agreed to bring me for a ride to Atlantic Beach on the other side of Jacksonville, FL so I could walk barefooted on the sand and get my toes wet in the ocean. It was an experience that pleased me no end! I’m not sure what possessed me to want to walk on the beach but it was enticingly comforting to walk along and enjoy the beauty of the clear, bright day with the water rushing in, the few children playing, a few fishermen, and the little shore birds scurrying about. There were very few people which made it seem even better. The people that were there were sweet couples with little ones or older couples walking in the sand. Best of all it was free! Yes! Free! I may be wrong but I think that all beaches in Florida are public beaches and as long as you can find a legal place to park you can walk by the homes near the water and enjoy the wealth of natural charm. So the hour ride through Jacksonville was worth it for me. P&D’s Pop has been favoring his right knee for about a week now so he kindly waited for me to enjoy my stay and then calmly drove us back for a superior supper at Pier 6 Seafood in Macclenny. I enjoyed coconut shrimp, fried okra, rice pilaf and Key Lime Pie while Grampa had his favorite Salmon and mashed potatoes. The following day after the contest ended we went to visit the Heritage Museum in Macclenny. I shall post some photos as the days go by. There was no charge because the buildings are only open for special tours if you make an appointment. So we strolled through the reconstructed town and peeked through all of the windows! It was interesting.

We left to come home at 4am Central Time and since we hadn’t had breakfast we stopped at a Pilot Truck Stop and ate an excellent meal at a Denny’s. I was impressed; it was better than a Waffle House and much better than iHop. There are only three Denny’s in all of Louisiana, I think and the closest is about 75 miles away! Phooey!

I went to see the neurologist this past week and he gave me an excellent review! He did tell me that the numbness and pain I get in my left foot and leg is neuropathy and there is nothing to be done about it.  I didn't want any pills but I was hoping for some exercises!  He did tell me to continue to walk and stretch as usual - so I guess that's what I'll do. It doesn't bother me all of the time but I swear it makes me tippy! Oh well I suppose my body and mind are both aging as they're supposed to do! Not much to do about it but enjoy living! I'm a whole week behind getting this entry completed. It's been busy and I've been lazy too.

Exhausted . . .

I feel as if I’ve put in a 50 hour week! I helped out at the Early Learning Center today, my first day back to school since summer vacation, and I’m beat. I only helped out in two classes but in the first class the teacher was not there so a school runner was holding the fort. When I got there she had already gone through all of the materials the teacher had left for her so I read at least three books to the 4 year olds and then we had them make a self portrait! When the teacher arrived I helped out in a class of three year olds. Not sure why I ended up pooped but I was. When I left I went to North Park and walked in the gym for 45 minutes listening to Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I wanted to listen longer but I just quit walking and came home to eat some mac and cheese and drink a Root Beer Float. I think my pep is returning. P&D’s Pop has been making up big batches of hummingbird food. We have more than a dozen at a time diving in to eat at the five feeders. We’ll be leaving for a flying contest next week and he will add about three more feeders and hope that the nectar lasts until we get home!

I returned a couple of videos I had borrowed from the Baton Rouge Library on Goodwood Wednesday and I decided to walk around the Botanical Gardens and take pictures. I was surprised with how many pretty decent shots I got. The gardens are not at their best at the end of the summer but it was still a nice walk.

I had lots more to write about but my brain is in slow motion at this time. I had a good long conversation with an Oneco friend last evening and I felt as if we were in Connecticut! I’m all caught up on the the goings on up north! I think we’ll just have a pizza for supper. That’s my old standby for Fridays.

Lunch with a Hummingbird . . .

South Park neighbor
P&D’s Pop and I usually have lunch on the back porch and today a male Hummingbird joined us! Yesterday I talked P&D’s Pop into putting a feeder on a place mat on the table across from where he usually sits and sure enough a couple of Hummingbirds found it but we were not sitting outside at the table. I knew it was only a matter of time before we would be out there and one of them would be brave enough to fly in for lunch! That really was exciting - both Grampa and I just froze while the bird was deciding if it was going to land; we only relaxed after it had finished its drink. It came back about four times! That was very cool.

I picked up my brand new hearing aids and charger yesterday. I’m hoping these work well, no glitches, because I like them. Tiffany asked if she could connect them to my iPad for me. She had never done that before so I acquiesced. She was mentoring a grad student today and they were both pleased as punch to be able to connect to the iPad. I must admit that it is pretty cool to listen to music, podcasts and Audible through my hearing aids. I should be getting an iPod in the mail today that will work the same way.

Kiddo started High School today. It’s so hard to believe that he’s so grown up; that has to mean that Grampa and I are also pretty darned grown up! We feel great and have no medical complaints. I expect it to remain that way! Our new medical insurance, Anthem Blue Cross, called today because I did some big time complaining on an email survey they sent me after I had called to ask some questions about the charges we’re getting for Out Of Network. Sunshine, yes, that’s her name, spoke with me at length and said she’s pretty sure they are not supposed to be charging us Out Of Network prices because we have no choice about which doctors we choose to go to. Everyone in our Parish is actually out of network! She will be calling me back by Friday to let me know if she is correct. That would be wonderful. I don’t want to pay the bills we’re getting unless I’m certain we owe them. Sunshine agreed!

We went to South Park today and I was surprised to get a few decent photos of a Great Egret and a Juvenile Little Blue Heron. I played with my camera almost all day!

Jumping rope is not child’s play . . .

I will have to speed up my camera if I want to stop the action! (Too much of a hassle!)
Wow, I’m trying to find exercises I like for in the house. It’s too muggy for me outside. I do my stretches inside and now that I’ve found the basketball gym at North Park I can walk inside. Youngest big Kiddo is trying to help me find a small device that is not a phone so I can listen to podcasts or audible books while I walk. I don’t get bored walking outside but walking in the gym is kinda tough without some sort of distraction. I spent a good part of my hour  Friday making my brain speak in French! That was tough because I really need to talk out loud and when you use the facilities at PARDS you are only allowed to have silent devices so you don’t disturb others. There were only two other people walking with me and only for a short time but I really found it hard to dig out my French without talking out loud! I tried to describe P&D’s Pop and my beginnings when we started out moving to Moosup after living in Norwich and then East Hartford. The words did not come easily! So I think a small listening device will be perfect for me if youngest Kiddo can find something that’ll work. I did find a YouTube workout for my first jumping lesson and it was pretty good. They certainly don’t urge you to do too much - you never want to jump more than five minutes says the young woman! Not a problem - this older woman did a few jumps properly and called it quits! I do believe I’ll keep working at it but I’m afraid to go over board so I’ll just keep it simple!

Not what I wanted to happen . . .

House Finches
What in tarnation! I’ve had my hearing aids since October and the rechargeable batteries and the charger are giving me fits for a second time. Oticon seemed to think that they had corrected all of the ‘minor’ problems but that is not the case. Mine are acting up and I’m sick of it. I spoke with Tiffany, we’re almost best friends by this time, and explained what was going on. She called Oticon and they are sending me a complete new set of hearing aids with a new charger. Tiffany told them that I wanted to get my money back on the special charger and batteries which seem to be causing all of the problems; I’d just use regular batteries because when the hearing aids work they really are very good! They want me to try a whole brand new set up first but they agreed to reimburse me for the special charging unit if this doesn’t work out. So that’s a plus. I’m wearing them now with plain batteries and they are fine.

Went target practicing at Bass Pro today and the goggles I bought to go over my glasses to protect my eyelids worked fine except - both sets of glasses fog up! I did shoot better and seem to be able use the sights better than I had been. After we got home P&D’s Pop drilled 18 holes in the protective chemical goggles we had bought so hopefully they won’t keep fogging up on me! Life ain’t easy when you’re 65!

Our  new Connecticut Teachers’ Retirement Board health insurance has been a bit of a pain so far but they did pay for my membership at the great health facility at North Park here in Denham Springs. There is an Olympic sized pool, oodles of work out contraptions, exercise classes and my favorite, an air conditioned basketball court where I can walk to my heart’s content. I walked an hour today and it felt good. I must admit I splurged when I got home and ate a Dixie cup of vanilla ice cream and four Piroulines! Heck I may have to walk again tonight!

Extremely disappointed . . .

Shelbie - Pastel by Karen Gileau St. Jean
It was a seemingly good comfortable beginning of the day at South Park; we were there at 7 and there was even a slight breeze while the sun stayed behind some clouds so the walking was peppy and not draggy. As I walked and P&D’s Pop flew his latest model I heard sirens; charging through the park came a small lead fire truck and then a big one. I was looking for smoke but they just kept coming to where I was walking so of course I got out of the way. They stopped at the furthest pavilion where it seems a young guy had collapsed from an overdose. I think he had come to the park after he had already taken the drugs because I remember seeing him pull up to the pavilion rather fast and hurry out of the small green older truck without a shirt and grab a sweatshirt from the back of the truck and put it on. He was a thin looking young man with longish dark hair and whiskers. I didn’t think anything of it except I was surprised to see someone put on a sweatshirt! Soon after the ambulance and police arrived. Damnation - it brings me to tears to feel that in someway I was a part of the scene just by being there. It ruins my faith in humanity every time I come in close contact with evil and it is evil. The devil is stronger than ever and I want him to stay away from my bailiwick; I like my blinders.

Speaking of blinders I was also fortunate at the park because I was able to watch a couple saddle up their three year olds, a Palomino and a Red Roan, and put them through their paces. I rarely get to see horses at the park so that was a treat. The riders told me that they generally ride in the evening because it’s cooler. I’m glad I got to see them today.

Tomorrow morning should be interesting as my friend’s little girl will be staying with us for a few hours while her Mom gets ready for the new school year at the Early Learning Center. I think I may try to figure out how to get the Wii working! I haven’t used it for a few years!

Lots of ordinary stuff but it still ‘Wows me' . . .

There are days where I just can’t seem to get moving except if I kick myself in the buttski! That’s pretty hard to do but I do it because I know it's what I need! We’ve been going to the park almost every morning and the walking is tough because of the humidity so I don’t even carry my camera with me. The walking is really good for body and soul but I wish the water I lose sweating my way around the track and my very own walking trail would show up as pounds lost! It doesn’t but I will still keep pushing through. It’s not painful but it is so damned uncomfortable; I won’t quit because physically I feel really fine. It’s almost scary to feel so well. I really feel like the 65 I’ve spoken of before. Heck, it must be the prunes and blueberries I eat every day!

I needed some nice greeting cards and I was able to talk P&D’s Pop into a ride to Barnes&Noble in Baton Rouge with a trip to La Madeleine for a second breakfast before hitting up the bookstore. I like their card selection better than the one at Walmart or Whole Foods. I’m getting picky in my dotage. I usually read every evening from at least 9 to 11 but lately I’ve been almost falling asleep in my chair by 10:10 or so. I finally quit fighting it and go to bed only to wake up wide eyed and bushy tailed by 6am. It works out okay though because I can get my walking in before the sun gets too high in the sky.

Went to see Thoroughly Modern Millie at Théâtre Baton Rouge with P&D’s Pop and although I know theatre is not his cup of tea he was very good! I think that I may keep a list of their productions on hand and when I need to get to a théâtre to keep my sanity I’ll just hope I can grab a single last minute ticket and drive to Baton Rouge for a matinée.  I realize how much I miss Angie and all of the plays we attended at Providence Performing Arts. It’s been ten years and sometimes it feels like it was yesterday that she died and left me on my own to make new friendships. There are new people and old people in my life but there will never be another Agnès. There is a special place in our hearts and souls where we keep contact with our loved ones who have ventured to God’s heaven - thank God we knew and loved these kind, generous and at times cantankerous members of our families and our friends.

I received an interesting email from one of my second cousins asking me to write up what I remember of my father’s brothers and sisters. I’m not a writer by any stretch of the imagination but I think I’ll give it a try; rather than email her my thoughts I may just use this crazy blog to see if I can help her out. She will also write what she remembers of them. I believe Marie is about 8 years younger than I so we should be able to come up with a few stories about our Caron Aunts and Uncles. Not sure how to go about this but I’ll kinda figure it out as I go!

Rearranging . . .

Gibbs Gardens
Sometimes ya just gotta rearrange your thinking to make life a bit smoother. At Mass Sunday our young seminarian mentioned how the Lord never said it was going to be easy to get to heaven. And there seems to be proof of that when you look around and see the chaos but if you slowly think about it you can make your own life sweeter, more comfortable, kindly and warm if you choose to enjoy the  mundane. I was rather down to start this day as I threw out emails and checked in on Facebook. There was nothing of significance that popped up. I wasn’t even tempted to like what most of my friends had posted or even what I had posted! It dawned on me that perhaps I should just go about my day and relax, appreciate every moment for what it is, a moment alive on this planet Earth where I can choose to not do “chores” but rather take deep breaths and go about my daily routines with tranquility and acceptance. So off I went in my spiffy, recently cleaned 2012 Hyundai to the Neighborhood Walmart to pick up some celery for tonight’s tuna salad, that P&D’s Pop will make later on today, some dry goods and a book of stamps. I was going to go to the self checkout but one of the ladies who was in customer service offered to get the stamps for me and also check me out. She was pleasant and sweet. I loved it. I felt like giving her a hug because I believe she is undergoing chemotherapy and she was as warm and alive as could be in spite of it. Then at the CVS I was able to use my 25% off coupon on the very expensive eye drops I use at least twice a day - saved $11 because the cashier explained that I could use it on two packages since it wasn’t on sale! Then I decided I needed a very large CC’s Mocha Decafe; the folks at the drive through were on target and made me smile with their service. So there you go, an excellent beginning to this 85 degrees cool Monday!

When we were at the park today P&D’s Pop had a mishap with the electric plane. The grass was too high and it caught the lines so he crashed. He’s in the process of fixing it now as we will need that plane to fly well in Florida. UPS just dropped off the return box for the 3G Heart Monitor. Yay! One less box in the house. Gotta finally get to today’s paper and see if I can keep my composure or if I will have to skip most sections!

And I thought I was prepared . . .

The Trail of Tears - Gibbs Gardens - Ball Ground, Georgia
I remember Ma saying, “ You know what 'thought' did? Peed in his pants.” Well I didn’t do that but something that could have been much worse! We’ve been going to Bass Pro almost every Wednesday to target practice and this past Wednesday was no exception. We always have eye and ear protection. The ejected shell casings from my Browning 22 often go flying so I generally wear long pants, high neckline and sneakers so I don’t get upset when one hits me; they’re hot and they burn! Well this time one of the shells flew above me and dropped directly down inside of my glasses. It hit my right eyelid and by the time I managed to grab my glasses with my left hand, bend my head to let the casing fall to the floor it had already burned my lid pretty good. I’m lucky it didn’t do more damage but it certainly let me know that I wasn’t wearing the right kind of eye protection! I’ll be picking up a pair of safety googles with an extension above the eyes. Wow, that was scarier after I got home and iced it. It didn’t look like much but the next day it looked awful and worse still the day after that! It’s really hard to act fast and safely when you’ve got a loaded pistol in your hand and your ear protection is holding your glasses extra tightly to your head! Oh well. I’m fine just added another scar to this beat up 65 year old body! Yes, 65, the heart surgery in 2015 made me feel 10 years younger!

Was hoping to give our son the portrait my friend Karen did of his Connecticut puppy, Shelbie, but he was out catching fish with his wife so we went to the park here in town for a good walk while the sun was hiding behind the clouds and then stopped at Marble Slab Creamery for ice cream. That felt very refreshing today. We’ve got company coming Thursday. Shelbie’s younger sister, Daytona will be with us for about five or six days while her folks go a visiting the northern grandkids. We always like to keep Daytona even though she favors P&D’s Pop over me! Still when he’s not available she looks to me for company!

Our next flying contest will be in Glen St. Mary, Florida in September. With a beautiful name like that I expect the ride along the Gulf Coast will be tantalizing. I may need to stop often to look around!Tomorrow I will see Dr. Thompson who set me up with the heart monitor to make sure all is working as advertised! I think it is working just fine now that Medtronic has sent me the 4G device! Yay!

Hot Fudge Sunday . . . I really needed that . . .

Untouched photo from Ball Ground, Georgia
Yes I really, really did. It’s been a little disconcerting between last week and today. A week ago we drove to the VA Hospital in New Orleans to see a new doctor about getting P&D’s Pop some cholesterol medicine that wouldn’t bother his stomach like all of the others do. We did really well getting there and returning after the doctor visit which also went well. He’ll start his new stuff today. We both get nervous when we have to drive into any city in Louisiana but New Orleans is the worse aggravation as of this time! The next day P&D’s Pop brought me to Lane Medical Center in Zachary to have the small heart monitor device inserted on what’s left of my chest! That also went well but I get pooped out just from the shear aggravation of all of this hardware inside of me! It worked fine at the hospital but it wouldn’t work when we got home so I ended up speaking with Medtronic about fixing the problem. Without going into the lengthy details let’s just say that the 3G Monitor they gave me would only work with the bedroom shade open half way during the night. My room is facing the road and the connection was spotty. Of course they have a brand new 4G model which they didn’t give me. That came in today. Yay! I set it up myself and it works! They’ll be sending me a mailer so I can return the 3G. Thursday we kept three year old Lucy for the morning so her Mom could help her Grandmother take care of her Uncle who was hospitalized and her Grandfather who is at home but very sick. Then on Friday we left for Canton, Georgia to take part in a Control Line Flying Contest. It was close to an 11 hour drive because of the accidents and traffic in Montgomery, Alabama and the super congested loop around Atlanta. I was fit to be hog tied if I didn’t get outside to walk off all of that sitting time so we ate at the Out Back and then found the park where the contest was to be held. That was the best part of the day. The park was beautiful with great trails for easy walking but that did not help me to sleep Friday night. Saturday morning came very slowly and I was dragging but the day at the contest went well. P&D’s Pop got First Place in Warbirds Stunt and I managed to walk myself into a good night’s sleep. Sunday was a short day of flying. Early in the morning I walked about 3 1/2 miles at the park and in the afternoon we went to  Ball Ground, Georgia to walk another 2 miles or so at Gibbs Gardens which comprises 300 acres of outstanding gardens for all seasons and Mr. Gibbs’ Manor House. After dinner we fell asleep around 7:30 so we could get up at 3:00am Eastern Standard Time and make our way home. It worked out well. We slept like logs once we were home!

But , bien sûr, life loves to throw you some curves. Chase Bank was supposed to get a new credit card to us before we left on our trip because it pays better than our present card. Of course it didn’t come on time. I had left a note on the door asking UPS not to leave any packages. And bien sûr they left the new credit cards under the mat with another package of investment stuff. We didn’t even look under the mat until we returned from breakfast today and noticed that the mat felt a little weird! There were all of our papers! Naturally I needed to speak with someone to make sure all of our points from the cards we will be closing show up on the new card. That was a disaster in the making and I will not explain it here. Let’s just say businesses do not like dealing with customers on the phone; they want to text you! Ha! Phooey! They dealt with me in person, on the phone. It only took three different people to get the job done!

I just came back from a splurge. I had to return a poster I had had framed at Michael’s because the color of one of the mats was wrong. After that I stopped to get a Hot Fudge Sunday with coffee ice cream and walnuts. I didn’t dare ask for wet nuts because I thought I might get run out of the child friendly business! Feeling much better now that I’ve had my treat. It was better than a Margarita! I can’t believe I just wrote that!

A la recherche du temps perdu . . .

The Robidoux Home by Henriette Robidoux-Deojay - Our Caron-Rose home is in the background. I've always loved this pen and ink by my Cousine Henriette. Her daughter Kate gave this to me. She had made the sketch into note cards. I'm so glad that I saved one. It was my intention to have more made up but I never did. There was a well worn path between the homes from time immemorial - I am overcome with love.
I've been looking for the tin types, daguerreotypes and other old photos from the Moosup house which we inherited  by dint of buying the Moosup property back in 1969. Ma Tante Rose came with the house and our children were fortunate that they never had a baby sitter as Ma Tante cared for them whenever P&D's Pop and I were out. We ended up with many items of sentimental value which came with the Caron family when they moved to Moosup around 1910. I've given much of it away to cousins as I didn't know what to do with all of the photos and religious items. Since there were 11 living children when my grandparents emigrated from Canada to Salmon Falls, New Hampshire where Pa was born and therefore there were 12 who finally moved to Moosup, Connecticut we had lots of stuff  'on the other side' upstairs in our old home. Even though I had given much away we still brought some things that I couldn't bare to not have with me. I think that somehow old things and I just gravitate to each other. Part of the reason we're comfortable in our vintage 1996 home here in Louisiana is because we brought a lot of the 1803 Moosup home with us. But now it's time to see if I can give some of the older items to a museum in Baton Rouge.

That is why I have posted the photo of my cousin Henrietta's sketch on my page today. I had put it for safe keeping in the old trunk 'on the other side'  that came from Canada with my grandparents. The memories are strong. When I get teary eyed about Moosup it's not because we're not there anymore it's because I miss what we were when we lived in that old house. Most of the people are now within Heaven's Gate and those that are on Earth have their unique lives to live but the old times are alive and well in my heart and soul. We are fortunate to have been born and brought up in an age where people took the time to talk with us little kids and we learned how hard they worked and how hard they played. They enjoyed sharing all they had with each and every member of the family no matter how far removed.  Yes, I still love the old memories; hopefully we've become a part of someone else's comfortable 'temps perdu.'

Quote:
No sooner had the warm liquid mixed with the crumbs touched my palate than a shudder ran through me and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary thing that was happening to me. An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses, something isolated, detached, with no suggestion of its origin. And at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me, its disasters innocuous, its brevity illusory – this new sensation having had on me the effect which love has of filling me with a precious essence; or rather this essence was not in me it was me. ... Whence did it come? What did it mean? How could I seize and apprehend it? ... And suddenly the memory revealed itself. The taste was that of the little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before mass), when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of tea or tisane. The sight of the little madeleine had recalled nothing to my mind before I tasted it. And all from my cup of tea.
— Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time

It's too damned hot . . .

What the heck?
I guess when you move to Louisiana you should expect hot but today really took the cake and I don't think the heat wave is even close to ending! It is 98 degrees. I refuse to look at the thermometer until this evening when I hope we'll at least get back into the 80's.

We had a great time yesterday when we brought Puppy back home and Big Kiddo and his wife fried the catfish they had caught when they were camping in Arkansas. It was the best. They really know how to make it so good that I, who doesn't usually like fish, love it. They also fry up some mean french fries and make homemade tartar sauce.  What more could you ask for? I made sure I was famished before we left our home so I put away a lot of fish!

I can't believe that P&D's Pop was out mowing at a little after 6am this morning; I went for my walk at 6:30 and it was already over 80. When I finished my walk I fed the birds and used out new little electric blower to clean off the porch and driveway.  Wow, we both headed for the showers! Anyway the yard looks great and I'll water my flowers this evening when it'll still be over 90 I'm sure! I've planted some cantaloupe and peas in my grow pots and they seem to be doing okay.  I don't expect them to produce until fall so it'll be interesting to see if we have a decent crop! I'm not at all accustomed to the growing season down here. It's pretty mixed up!

We went to Barnes & Noble to get P&D's Pop some more Tolkien.  He just finished the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and liked them. It's so hot that he is spending part of the day inside reading! We also ended up having breakfast for lunch at La Madelaine a really nice place right next door to the book store.  I like to go there when I venture into Baton Rouge on my own for doctors' appointments but it's even better when I have his company.  I was able to replenish my supply of nice greeting cards too. That's a plus. I don't have to spend the money ordering them on line. CVS carries some good cards but not the fancier ones that I prefer.

I expect to hear from a gentleman who works for the Burden Museum and Gardens  in Baton Rouge. I'm hoping he may be interested in the old books, photos and cloth that I brought from our Caron Homestead in Moosup, CT. It would be nice if they could use some of it at the Museum. I really hope the museum follows through on the contact. I've found that a lot of people say they'll do something and then nothing happens.  That seems to happen in Louisiana a lot.  Just read the papers and see how lax we are about everything down here!! I don't think that that's a bum rap either!

Best homily in years . . .

Birdbath
I enjoy the peace and quiet calm of Sunday Mass along with the music; it’s always a blessing to sit, relax, take some deep breaths and slowly let whatever stress I allow into my life to disappear. Today a young seminarian, John Vu, who is assigned to our parish for the summer spoke about the parable of the Good Shepherd and he made it his own. He explained how he had thrown out his original homily and worked on today’s version last night. I’m glad he did as he told us how hard a shepherd must work to keep his flock from sneaking away; it's very difficult to get them back to the fold. That shepherd works very hard and is not always successful but he never gives up. Father John (he will be Father John next year) spoke from his heart but more importantly from his surpassing intelligence - there is no guile, no self serving just an honest, sincere young man. I expect he will be able to continue in his honest service to the people because he is a strong individual who seems to think for himself and not be taken in by some of the platitudes we usually hear from the pulpit or in any discussions  with modern day Catholics. I like him! I wish I were better versed in the Bible and knew him well so I could better explain his homily but I felt that he was saying that the sheep aren’t too bright and I must concur! I think that the Good Shepherd has an impossible job! But it makes me smile to know that He never gives up.

It is already 90 degrees out and looking through the kitchen window I can see the breeze working through the branches of the Live Oak and my rainbow spinner is enjoying a ride but if I go out the door the humidity will strike me down! I shall walk in the house today and only water the plants this evening. We'll be leaving shortly to bring puppy pup back home; we are fortunate that son  and his wife are going to have a fish fry! I’ll make certain that I’m starving before we go.

I suppose . . .

Puppy Sitting
I went to my follow up appointment after wearing a heart monitor for the month of May. It took almost two hours of waiting before the doctor came in; he did chastise me a bit for leaving the examination room to ask if they had forgotten me! He said that he had many patients on this day in particular who needed a lot of education and I was one of them and so he would be late for his next appointment too. I told him it was okay as long as he hadn’t been drinking coffee and snacking. He said no, he’d been with the dancing girls. I cracked up.  Then he did explain what CIS (Cardiovascular Institute of the South) was trying to do in my case. The insurance would not pay for the five year loop recorder he wanted to install on me unless they had already done the one month monitor. So now that the one month monitor did not prove that I have atrial fibrillation he wants the five year monitor because he doesn’t want me on Coumadin, a blood thinner,  as they’re not sure if it’s worth the risk because of the bad side effects. The neurologist had put me on a whole baby aspirin to try to ward off possible heart infarctions; Dr. Thompson said the aspirin might help some but not enough and my stomach doesn’t like the whole aspirin so I’m taking one half daily. Since they know I’ve had a TIA at some point, they don’t want anymore of them, but they also don’t want to risk the strong blood thinning medicines therefore the five year loop recorder will keep track of what my heart is doing and let Dr. Thompson know by sending messages to his inbox if my heart is misbehaving and they need to intervene in some way to prevent a stroke. I’m not certain I’ve explained this correctly. But I am certainly willing to do as he suggests because I’ve seen what strokes can do to people and I sure as heck don’t want one. So as long as my new insurance okays the loop recorder it will be injected into the left side of my chest and I’ll have a small monitor to put near my bed that will send out the heart information. I don’t have to do anything but show up at the Cath Lab in Zachary and I don’t even need someone to drive me! Pretty cool. I needed to write this down so I can remember what the Doctor said and to prove to myself that my brain is still working okay!

Time for a small adventure . . .

On The Wild Side
The heat can get you down so we started the day with a trip to Birdland in Saint Francisville for breakfast. I didn’t order my usual sweet potato waffle because the same cook was cooking today and the last time he made my favorite waffle he kinda messed up; I didn’t want to take a chance. I ordered a three eggs scrambled sandwich on ciabatta bread with pepper jack cheese and ham; I was surprised at how good it was. I watched him as he cooked and it seems he is very young but real ‘chef.’ I didn’t tell him about my misgivings when I saw he was the cook! I’ll have to try the waffle again and see if turns out perfectly! We left the restaurant and ventured down to the old ferry landing. Again I had a surprise; Saint Francisville has taken down the fence that kept people and cars from being able to get closer to the Mississippi. We walked along the path on the west bank and were pleasantly surprised to see some fishermen! We walked even further along and found many spots where you can bring your car and park right next to a fishing spot. I don’t think too many people know about it yet because it didn’t seem to have been used very much. Of course when it rains or floods there would be no way to get to those spots! Still P&D’s Pop and I renewed our fishing and hunting licenses today when we went for target practice at Bass Pro. It’s been quite a while since I had some practice. We’ll have to remedy that because I still need beaucoup practice. It doesn’t help that the ammunition I’m using is old and doesn’t like to shoot well in my Browning 22. Hopefully I get some good ammo after I finish off the last 150 rounds! I think I’ll do that next week. I hate the gun jamming on me all the time. I have enough trouble getting to hit the bull’s eye without have a jam every time I put in a magazine!

I’m still on the grouchy side after the snafu with AT&T. Someone at AT&T unsubscribed us from their phone service and it took me about 3 hours on the phone and online chats to even get someone out here to fix the problem and when he came the poor guy really shouldn’t have been sent out because it wasn’t a tech problem it was an office problem! So we were without the home phone for three days because of the company’s incompetence. It will be interesting to see if we get an email apology for their incompetence and seeming lack of caring for their disruption of our lives. My blood pressure goes up when ever I have to deal with unadulterated negligence and the unsurpassing lack of basic intelligence in the human beings who get paid to talk in circles while explaining the problems their company is having handling all of their complaint calls.

Okay. Time to quit bitching and play with my photos!

Didn’t mind going to Women’s for a change . . .

Sweltering Morning in South Park
I had my annual checkup at Women’s today but for a change I was looking forward to it because I have decided that any doctor’s appointment completed is worthy of treating myself to a special meal, snack, sweet, drink or whatever else pops into my head. I think P&D’s Pop has figured that out so he offered to accompany me which is unusual! After passing my physical with flying colors we went to Frank’s in Prairieville for a noontime breakfast. For a whopping $5 I had chicken fried steak with plain white gravy and a biscuit. Wow, it was just the right amount of everything and I was surprised at the price. We ate for under $20 for the two of us. The price is irrelevant but interesting just the same. The coffee was excellent and P&D’s Pop’s hash, eggs, grits and toast were also just right. I’m now looking forward to my Friday checkup at CIS in Zachary! I usually end up at Waffle House but I may just have to see if I can find another breakfast place - I think Smoothie King serves some type of breakfast. I wonder if it’s worth checking out?

Went to South Park at 6:30 this morning to try to get in a walk and some bird shots before the sun and humidity became unbearable. Well, it was unbearable from the start and the only bird who sat still for me was so high up in a rotten old tree that I didn’t get any great photos. I did manage to get a self portrait as I was trying to capture the heavy dew on the wild grasses in the drainage ditches! Trying to coax P&D’s Pop into a movie this week but I don’t think he’s buying into the idea! Drat. There don’t seem to be any movies worth seeing at this time  of year. May have to look at Amazon Prime!

Sunday travel in Baton Rouge . . .

Keeping cooling photos on my mind
I’ve decided that since traffic isn’t too bad in the city on Sundays it is a great time to find my way around without dealing with I10. That highway scares the heck out of me; I’m always afraid I’m going to get stuck in a traffic jam from Hell and never make it back home; I’d be like Charlie caught on the MTA ; he never returned! So today I told P&D’s Pop that I was planning a trip to Talbot’s and Whole Foods on Corporate Boulevard just to see if I could get there without going on I10. He offered to drive Miss Irène! Yikes, that’s a lot of stress as Miss Irène is moi and I hadn’t planned to use Waze or any type of GPS; I was just going to wing it! Well, we did okay. Took I12 to Airline North and then a left on to Old Hammond which miraculously turns into Corporate. We were there before Talbot’s opened! Old Hammond has a lot of very fancy, gated communities. I was pretty surprised at how beautiful Baton Rouge can be if you know your way around. I had already ordered what I wanted from Talbot’s on line because the store didn’t  have the t-shirts I wanted so I cajoled my driver into a walk around Whole Foods with me. That was a hoot! Wow! We just looked and were surprised at the people with families eating out while shopping! It’s a big store and very different from Big Y, Rouses or my Neighborhood Walmart but I’m sure it’s not the right shopping experience for us! I may try it once more on my own just for shits and giggles but I think I’ll stick to what I know for the foreseeable future. We left without buying a thing although I must admit that they had the best selection of cards by Papyrus I’ve ever seen in a brick and mortar store. I then coaxed my at this point reluctant driver to find the Barnes &Noble at City Place about a mile away. I was surprised that area has gotten a bit shabby. It looks like older buildings are being torn down and new ones are already shooting up. I don’t think City Place is very old either. We made our way home the same way we got there. I was impressed with how easy it was to find our way but my driver was not impressed. He seems to prefer going on I10. I’m glad that my experiment worked. Now I’ll have to try it out during the week. I also found an easy way to get to the Botanical Gardens so when the weather cools down I have another excursion on tap.

Odd 8th Grade Graduation . . .

Backyard Sunset - Denham Springs
Flew up North for our Kiddo's 8th Grade Graduation, his Mom's 45th Birthday and Father's Day plus getting to see brothers and sisters for both P&D's Pop and myself. It was a very short 6 day trip but extremely gratifying. Kiddo's family is so easy to be with. We enjoyed every moment. Yes, I certainly do miss our daughter and her family but Kiddo is growing up now and has a life all his own.  When we left in was in the pool with a couple of friends who stopped by on their bikes. It's so much fun seeing him growing up and having fun.

Now the "Graduation" was not a graduation it was an 8th Grade Promotion from Clark Lane Middle School in Waterford, CT which took place at the Waterford High School Auditorium. About 213 students were called up alphabetically and each received a certificate that indicated they had been promoted. That was pretty much it - a few very short speeches, a few songs and that was that.  It took an hour. On June 14, the week before we arrived for the Promotion Ceremony, our Kiddo and his parents were invited to the Honors Breakfast in the Clark Lane cafeteria where awards were given out and that was that.  Everything was extremely low key.  The best part of it all was each kiddo received a Blue T-shirt announcing them as the class of 2022. I'm guessing that the powers that be have decided that eighth grade doesn't mean much of anything any more and that the kiddos must at least graduate from High School before they have received anything of value from their education. There are still schools in Connecticut following the traditional graduation exercises with caps, gowns, gold cords and lots of awards but not Waterford. In a way I think Waterford is on the right track because I certainly can't see any of these kids calling it quits after 8th Grade as I don't believe they've learned enough to make it any where in life like our parents did. I'm almost 76 years old and only one of my parents graduated from High School and went on to Assumption College. My mother was mostly self taught although she did attend Plainfield High. Both of my parents were highly educated avid readers, writers and story tellers. I know our mother would outshine today's college grads in many ways. But that dissertation is for another day!

And she’s on her way back home . . .

Youngest is on her way from Detroit to Amsterdam as I write. It still amazes me that we are able to get to far off places so fast - tiring travel but impressive just the same. The NOLA Baby Cakes game last night was a lot of fun. I was impressed with Airline Stadium. It’s got to be a pretty old baseball park but they’re keeping it in good shape. They have a beautiful hill off of right field with a line of crape myrtles along the top. It is well mowed and it seems that you can buy tickets to watch the games from the hill. That’s pretty neat. Even though it was a night game it was still pretty warm in the stands. We did have a slight breeze blowing on us in our seats behind home plate. I don’t know what D paid for the tickets but the price of 4 hotdogs, 1 beer, 1 soda, 1 water and a scoop of dipping dots was about $50. Still I’d love to go again - gotta have a hotdog at a ball park no matter the cost!

P&D’s Pop had no trouble getting us to the game and home again. It takes about an hour and a quarter to get there. There was a bad accident on I10 as we came home but fortunately we were able to get by it before the road was closed. There is no room for error when you are driving that part of I10. It’s really just a very long bridge over the swamps and bayous with no lighting so an accident can strand people for hours. It looked like there were some people who were pretty banged up but they were all out of their vehicles waiting for the police. I did say lots of strong prayers for them. I hope the prayers helped.

Today I made a pretty good gumbo for lunch before we left for the airport. I really should go to bed but I am wired so I think I’ll read a bit and see if I can finally call it a night. Oh, one more thing - after supper we were watching a country music show and noticed that the TV sound was excellent. We could both hear the voices clearly without turning up the sound or hearing aids. Our lovely daughter did some kind of magic and everything on the TV is better. That is super good for us!

Really hot last day for youngest kiddo . . .

It’s been a good week having D for a visit. She has fixed up so much stuff on the smart TV and the old computer that we’ll be in good shape until she and G come next fall. Even with leftovers the night before last she cooked up lots of fresh veggies and  P&D’s Pop fixed up tomatoes and cukes from our Earth Grow boxes. My tomatoes are finally turning red but they are more like big cherry tomatoes then a beefsteak tomato! I’m disappointed but I’ll make a better choice next year and I shall learn how to prune the plants properly. We’re driving in to New Orleans for the Baby Cakes game this evening and then tomorrow we’ll be leaving home at about two pm to get D to the airport for about 3:30. Her flight is scheduled to depart at 5:38 with a stop in Detroit before heading overseas to Amsterdam; then it's a nine hour layover before finally taking the last flight to Tees Valley Airport about a mile from her home in the UK. When we get back from that trip to NOLA I may just take the pruning shears to the tomatoes. I doubt that I can make the plants suffer too much by cutting off what look like suckers. It’ll be too late to do much good but what the heck it’s worth a try.

We went to see the movie Solo at the Movie Tavern yesterday and it was pretty darned good especially for people who have kept up with the Star Wars saga. We also went to Big Kiddo’s home and then out for dinner at the new Walk Ons in Zachary. Wow! We were all shocked at the amount of new housing developments on the road to the restaurant. Zachary is growing much too fast. I’m quite sure they did not considered flooding when the politicians allowed the monster companies to come in and put up houses everywhere there is a open plot. I doubt there are sewer facilities to handle all of the new homes and businesses going up so they’ll have lots of engineered sewer systems with the runoff going into the drainage ditches. So backwards we are here in Louisiana. As long as the political hacks get their cut it doesn’t matter how much the waterways get befouled. I think I could learn to be a hard line environmentalist and tree hugger down here!I've never seen so much incompetence at every level of government. Connecticut is now an out migration state because the politicians keep promising free everything ; the only people paying taxes are the middle class, what’s left of it, and small businesses. Here in Louisiana the government taxes everything and then puts the money in the deep pockets of the lobbyists, politicians, lawyers and monster businesses. The little guy is with out any hope of improvement in the schools, roads, bridges, hospitals. Even tax exempt groups promising to help the poor out of their poverty take money off of the top and pocket it.

Gee how the heck did I get to this rant from what started out to be a good day! It’s easy to get distracted when all you read in the paper is about the nincompoops running government and how they get re-elected by promising free stuff to all and sundry. Oh well, we're off!

Time is running out. . .

Youngest child’s visit will be coming to an end after we go to the AAA Baby Cakes game Wednesday in New Oreans. We’ve managed to spend time together which is always good for my soul. I enjoy seeing her with P&D’s Pop - it’s as if no time has gone by and we are back to our family days in Moosup with Ma Tante, the other two kiddos, Ma, Pa and Gram. It’s amazing that she will be 40 years old in a a little over a month. Time just slips away and since we have no way to change that it’s best to accept life the way it is at this very moment. Having the youngest home feels good; I like to see her hanging out on the couch or sitting in P&D’s Pop’s chair watching TV. On this trip she has improved what we can see on the Smart TV. We were having trouble getting it to download the free Amazon movies but it is now working properly. She also set up an external hard drive for the computer so I don’t lose the important family photos and the documents that are saved on the computer itself. Amazingly I haven’t really done much cooking since she and P&D’s Pop have been taking care of supper when we don’t go out to eat! Dad does the meat and daughter cooks up the veggies - kale and all! I could definitely get used to this. She doesn’t like to clean up after cooking and I gladly do that as my part of our petite famille! Our famille is not our Moosup famille since it is Dad, Mom and one daughter but it works well. I imagine G will come with her on the next visit. He is good company; we don’t need fancy just plain being ourselves is good.

We did manage to do some clothes shopping at Cavenders one day; the next day we went to the Tanger Outlets in Gonzales where D always finds some really good buys especially on colder weather clothes since in the UK the warmest it ever gets is in the 70’s. She can come with an empty backpack and leave with a full one! I also generally find a couple of things for myself. I’m definitely not a good shopper but you can’t beat the prices at the Outlets.

We’ve eaten out at the Longhorn and Big Mike’s which has been great because our youngest has had no problem finding completely dairy free foods. She couldn’t eat the chocolate chip and snicker doodle cookies that I made for her because of the butter! It’s okay, though, because I gave some to our neighbor and he loved the plain ones and his wife like the chocolate chip cookies.

We also went to Red Stick Spice on Jefferson in Baton Rouge and I bought myself the coolest cup to steep my tea. They have a great variety of herbal teas; I’m In the process of refining my taste. I was happy to have D with me because from Jefferson I also found Corporate Boulevard without ever going on I10. I now can get to the closest La Madeleine and an upscale Mall when I’m in the mood to be out and about on my own. Yay! I’m getting better and better at finding my way around thanks to my navigator and her smart phone. I may see if I can find a holder of some sort for my iPad so that I can use Waze while I drive and have it where I can see it. I am doubtful because my iPad is rather large. Gee, I may have to see if they have baby iPads! That might be cool as long as it can fit on the Hyundai’s dash!

PS  I almost forgot!  We also got in a craft brewery tour Saturday afternoon.  It was fun and right in Baton Rouge off of  Airline South at Southern Craft Brewing Company.  We started out with Dad and D trying out their Honey Ale called Swamp Sting.  Dad and D liked it so after the tour, it's a small place, we bought a six pack to go. They've only been in business for two years. Pretty neat operation. May have to move if they need or want to expand their sales.  Their cooler was loaded! I stuck with water!

And they're off . . .

What goes for an Eagle at South Park but is really a Mississippi Kite!
While husband and youngest big Kiddo are off to Chris' Meat Market to get some really great steaks for Memorial Day's little cookout I've just picked up around the house and ate snicker doodles, an excellent sweet orange, an egg and coffee for breakfast.  Husband and I have already spent time at the park.  We decided it was better to go even before I ate breakfast because the weather is so hot that 72 degrees is a blessing at 7am! Our youngest daughter is visiting and was up when we got home.  She had found something for breakfast after having gone to bed at 9 last night trying to get over jet lag.  She flew into New Orleans yesterday late afternoon after have left the UK at 11pm our time the night before. That's a part of flying that I don't like - I'm not good with disrupted routines!

South Park was bare of people when we got there but as P&D's Pop was into his third flight a couple of boys on bikes came flying by me as I walked.  The older one, a strawberry blond kid about 9 years old spoke with me as I strolled.  He was very interested in P&D's Pop's planes and the photos I had been taking. So we chatted, walked and rode for a bit when I asked if he'd like to talk with Mr. P. He said his Grandma had told him not to bother the man flying the control line planes but I explained to Sam that if it was okay with his Gram we could talk with my ace flyer if he'd like that. So he went off and got permission for himself and his younger brother John to bike over to the flying circle. It was good to hear the questions they had; P&D's Pop spoke to them for a while until their Gram came with her truck to pick them up with their bikes.  Poor lady was told how there is a Hobby Shop in Baton Rouge where she could buy them a plane kit to build! Oh, oh, I'm afraid we started something! I had to laugh because she had a string around her neck and there was a white square medallion shaped something hanging from it.  She explained it was a piece of soap so she could wash their mouths out if they used bad words! I found that hysterical.

Well the happy wanderers are back with the steaks so I'm off to Cavender's to shop with the youngest for a belt and then off to Rouses for groceries.

You need lots of light weight clothes or none . . .

Wow. Only going on our third year in south Louisiana and this spring has been brutal. I’m finally learning how to cope with it a little! We were at the park for seven ante meridien when it opened and I didn’t even bother to put on my hearing aids. I like to wear them so I can hear the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees and the squirrels up above but it’s too damn hot and sweaty walking. It was so darned uncomfortable today I didn’t even grab the camera for my second mile because it is a chore just carrying it.  Bien sûr a lovely turtle was walking along the dried out drainage channel looking for cooler and wetter surroundings; I immediately rushed back to the truck for the Z200 and scurried as fast as the heat would allow back to my original sighting. Bien sûr (redundant, I know, I know) he was nowhere to be seen. He was certainly a lot faster than I finding what he was looking for. I think I heard him plop into the water inside of a big drainage pipe. I don’t have the courage to go down and look too closely into those pipes - there must be all sorts of critters I’d rather not encounter up close.

I did manage a few blue jay photos but the sun was in the wrong place for good lighting. When we got home husband and I pretty much had to strip down and change clothes. He gets really hot flying in the sun even though it is early morning. The washing machine gets a lot of abuse.  I may have to buy a lot more shorts, tank tops, sandals and underwear just to be able to go outside and enjoy the beautiful colors and sights of south Louisiana! I may start a puzzle  like I used to do in the freezing cold of northeastern Connecticut.  Down here it's the heat and humidity that sends me scurrying inside! I'm getting there.  One day I'll have it all figured out even if I have to badger husband to play cribbage on the back porch while we drink some White Zinfandel on the rocks!
