The earphones are working fine! I spoke with Apple today and as a final solution the lady told me to put the jack in and out of the iPad several times quickly. It worked. It finally went in and connected properly. I was amazed at how far in it went but, no matter, it's working like a charm. Good on me! I guess I'm always afraid that I'll break something. Even sister-in-law had problems with it because we are just such gentle souls!
